Giving the Gift of Cigars

Tis the season for a stogie, fa la la la la, la la la la??

For the past few holiday seasons, I?ve found that gifts are getting harder and harder to give. Not only has creativity fallen through the cracks, but presents are not as monetarily feasible as they once were: there are televisions for sale that cost more than my car. Because of this, holiday shopping has become an increasing burden, not only for me but for many others. As we find ourselves trapped somewhere between the shopping mall and the holidays of yore when the true meaning wasn?t showcased on a display stand at Macy?s, we think about how it used to be.

There was a time when the holidays were about more than purchasing the latest brand of technology or the most expensive cashmere sweater. It used to be so easy. A tie, a purse, even a bar of soap attached to a rope all fell into the category of a suitable gift for, back then, it was merely the thought that counted. But lately, these gifts have lost their ability to be accepted, and they aren?t the only ones. I have found that even the hand made card I give my parents as a gift each year is becoming met with less and less enthusiasm, no matter how much glitter I add..

Still, we haven?t lost this battle yet. With the onset of the season we are given the opportunity to reinvent the true spirit of the holidays; we are given the ability to give a gift that says something grander than simply, ?I have a huge limit on my credit card.? One way we can do this is by giving the gift of cigars.

Why Give Cigars as a Gift?

Cigars may not seem like a run-of-the-mill holiday gift but, in this age of overblown commercialism, their lack of reputation should work in their favor. Instead of representing brand name hand bags or a clothing line overseen by a professional rapper, cigars represent what the holidays are really all about: friendship, celebration, and happiness.

Giving a cigar as a gift conveys that some actual thought, and not just your paycheck, went into the gift giving process. Cigars, possessing a meaningful stigmatism, are often exchanged in the same manner friends exchange a knowing glance, or a comforting pat on the shoulder: they are exchanged in a way that makes them about something more that meets the eye.

What Kinds of Cigars to Give?

The type of cigar to buy simply depends on the recipient. For a cigar novice, cigar samplers make excellent gifts, giving the novice the ability to sample a variety of cigars, finding one he or she truly enjoys. If you don?t purchase a sampler, then a box of mild cigars ? such as the Macanudo from the Dominican Republic or the Casa Tora?o from Honduras - usually works best for beginners. For the cigar connoisseur, purchasing a box of their favorite brand ? or a brand you know they are dying to try ? is an excellent way to go. And, for novices and connoisseurs alike, enrolling them in a cigar of the month club will almost always be met with enthusiasm: it?s the gift that never gets extinguished, at least not while the membership is valid.

What are Some Unique Cigar Gifts?

You may find that some people who love cigars are already well stocked, seemingly having more tobacco reserves than Cuba. For these people, a more unique cigar gift may need to be purchased.

From a custom made cigar box to an ashtray engraved with a sentimental message, from an inscription laden cigar cutter to a leather cigar case, any kind of a cigar accessory makes an excellent holiday gift. Perhaps you know someone who could use a humidor or a person who, forever asking others for a light, is desperately in need of a Colibri.

For those who want to add in even more sentiment, purchasing a cigar lover one of their favorite brands and having the band engraved is a present that likely can not be rivaled, providing you with the rare opportunity to give a gift that can be both used and cherished.

Where to Buy Them?

The holidays are a time of mayhem, as people crowd shopping malls, the masses fill department stores, and those with a dial up Internet, surfing the Web to look for gift ideas, wait an hour for a page to load. However, a great amount of this can be avoided if you know what you are buying before hand, giving you the ability to get in, get out, and get home in time to take the turkey out of the oven.

Cigar gifts are one of the easiest gifts to buy, with many local cigar and tobacco shops having a large variety of cigars, and a large selection of accessories. The Internet, a portal that allows you to avoid lines and crowds, also provides several online resources that enable you to purchase any tobacco related item under ? or grown in ? the sun. Many of these online shops offer discounted prices and shipping for free.

Giving the gift of cigars or a cigar related item rarely goes up in smoke. Getting away from what has become the new traditional idea of holiday gifts ? designer jeans, video games, car stereos ? ironically evokes some old holiday tradition, a tradition filled with goodwill, friendship, bliss, and, of course, tobacco seeds.

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Cigars, Cheroots, and Cigarillos Made with Tobacco in Austria

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Cigars, Cheroots, and Cigarillos Made with Tobacco in Austria
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco in Austria face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco to Austria? How important is Austria compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco vary from one country of origin to another in Austria? On the supply side, Austria also exports cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco. Which countries receive the most exports from Austria? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco in Austria. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco for those countries serving Austria via exports, or supplying from Austria via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Austria fits into the world market for imported and exported cigars, cheroots, and cigarillos made with tobacco. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Austria in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Austria is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Austria compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Camacho Cigars Interview

Camacho Cigars, makers of premium handmade cigars, such as the highly rated Baccarat The Game & Baccarat Casino Vintage Selection, Camacho and La Fontana started out as a humble operation over 25 years ago;

Today they have grown to become a successful, vertically integrated company based in Miami, Florida. They grow their own tobacco, manufacture their own cigars and boxes, and handle their own distribution. Camacho Cigars manufactures 16 cigar names, seven of which are their own labels.

Cigar Review: Could you tell me about the history of the Eiroa Family in relation to the cigar business?

Christian Eiroa: Our story is very similar to most others that had to leave Cuba. My grandfather grew tobacco in Cuba. In doing so, he built a great relationship with the Oliva family (the tobacco people, not the cigar people). They were based in Tampa. My father left Cuba in 1959 and joined the army to participate in the Bay of Pigs invasion. He then served in Korea. Once finished, he went back to Tampa where he secured a job at Perfecto Garcia. When the Embargo was to commence, Angel Oliva offered my father to go to Honduras and try to grow tobacco. At this time, tobacco was being grown in many areas because the leaf brokers needed to find new sources of tobacco. After the first crop, my father decided to go on his own. Eventually, he had close to 2,000 acres where he grew tobacco in. Some in partnerships, some by himself. As time went on, he got into making cigars for others and in the mid - 80's he purchased the Baccarat "The Game" brand and in the mid 90's, Camacho.

Cigar Review: How important are cigars to the Eiroa Family?

Christian Eiroa: Growing tobacco and making cigars is all we have ever done! I grew up in the farms, worked in the factories since I was about 7 yrs. old over the summers. We love this business. What we love most is the creation of something so enjoyable that started with one small seed. It truly is amazing. You should come down to see us so you can witness it all yourselves. Yes, this is an invitation, you are welcome to come on any of the trips we program. All you have to do is cover your travel expenses and a couple of other incidental fees. How and when did you get involved in the family business? June 28th, 1995. Soon after I finished my master's degree and felt ready to go down to Honduras, I did. I guess I always knew that this is what I would end up doing. If there were a narrator, he would be saying: "It was Christian's destiny".

Cigar Review: Have the increased amount of hurricanes in the past year and a half hurt the your tobacco crops?

Christian Eiroa: Most of the time they do not run into our growing season. They do cause us to lose seed beds and they do delay the starting time. Nothing crucial, fortunately.

Cigar Review: Is business good for the Camacho brand right now?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, we just finished launching three great items: The Camacho Coyolar (Black), the Legend - ario and the Camacho Time campaign is under way. Camacho identifies our company so much that as of 11 / 01 / 05, we have changed our name to "Camacho Cigars". What is your perspective on the current status of the Cigar Industry? I think that the cigars being offered today in the U.S. are some of the best, ever, anywhere. Although most of the companies today are very traditional we love to see how the market is evolving. This only makes us want to keep pushing to see how much we can influence consumers' tastes. Does this make any sense? Because we were always following tradition, we were careful about not moving away from it. Today, this has become part of the fun. If you had time to interview some old - timers, guys who have been smoking for 20 + years, they might tell you just that. They might tell you how much they love the fact that the choices are available. The industry is solid and steady.

Cigar Review: Do you think the TV advertisements from truth.com have hurt or actually helped the tobacco industry?

Christian Eiroa: This is a good question. California once issued a report during the 90's to try to dissuade people from smoking cigars. However, the results only helped us. The results were:

The higher your education level and the higher your income, the more you smoked cigars and less you smoked cigarettes. The lower your education and the lower your income, the more you smoked cigarettes. I guess what I am trying to say is that a person who decides to make cigar smoking his hobby, does so knowing that this is not the healthiest of hobbies. They also know that their risks for addiction are much less. With this in mind, I think the answer would have to be "they have neither hurt nor helped". Those campaigns cater cigarette smokers more than they do cigar smokers.

Cigar Review: The recent talk is that we are heading into a new cigar boom, do you think we are headed that way?

Christian Eiroa: There has been talk about this for some time. The numbers do not agree with it, though. Consumption in our industry has remained steady with low single digit increased for the past 3 years. Those who feel the increases may be retailers who have had competitors close shop and us smaller cigar companies who have grown at the expense of some now defunct manufacturers and / or bigger companies.

Cigar Review: Do some lines sell more than others for Camacho Cigars? If so Which?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, our bread and butter: Baccarat "The Game".

Cigar Review: Can you tell us about what is being called "Camacho Black", your new line?

The Camacho Coyolar is a cigar made 100 % with the tobacco from the farm with the same name. It's a smaller property but has been my father's favorite farm for 40 years. We only used it to grow filler but this Coyolar seed actually yielded some beautiful wrapper. The cigars are much stronger than we anticipated so we have been letting them sit for longer periods of time. We are very happy with this cigar, especially since we have been able to make it with the tobacco from that farm.

Cigar Review: Are there going to be any new Cigars added to your lineup? If so could you tell us about the future plans of Camacho Cigars?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, the Legend-ario which has just been launched and next year there may be a surprise or two which I do not wish to talk about just yet.

Cigar Review: Do you have a favorite smoke from the Camacho Cigar lineup?

Christian Eiroa: The Camacho SLR Rothschild mad., the Legend-ario and the Diploma. Those are my three favorites.

The Dangers of Being Exposed Best Cigars to Cigar Smoke

We have all heard about the dangers of inhaling second hand smoke. Many people wonder if the dangers of inhaling cigar smoke are just as dangerous, or more. Unfortunately, it appears that being exposed to secondhand smoke from a lit cigar can be just as dangerousor morethan regular cigarette smoke.

All secondhand smoke emitted by tobacco products are classified as environmental tobacco smoke. Environmental tobacco smoke refers to all the secondhand smoke released from tobacco products that are lit, such as cigars or cigarettes. Research indicates that the smoke from cigars and cigarettes releases many of the same types of irritants. Both cigar and cigarette environmental tobacco smoke contain nicotine, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia. The environmental tobacco smoke from cigars and cigarettes also releases well-known carcinogens such as vinyl chlorine, benzene, arsenic, hydrocarbons, and nitrosamines. Cigars, because of their size, usually release more environmental tobacco smoke than cigarettes. Being around cigar smoke, then, can pose more of a health threat than inhaling secondhand smoke from Cao Cigars a lit cigarette.

Even though both cigars and cigarettes release similarly toxic environmental tobacco Cigar Smoking smoke, there are some key differences between Cigar Stores the two. These differences are related to the very different ways that cigars and cigarettes are manufactured. The production of cigars consists of a long process of fermentation and aging. During Cigar Cutter the production and fermentation process, large amounts of carcinogens are produced. Once a cigar has been fermented and aged, they are wrapped in a nonporous wrapper that keeps the cigar from burning too quickly. The fermentation process and nonporous wrapper both contribute to the high concentrations of carcinogens in the smoke of al it cigar. When a cigar is lit, the carcinogenic compounds produced during the fermentation process How To Smoke A Cigar are released. The nonporous wrapper also contributes to an unclean burn that is high in carcinogens.

Another reason why cigars produce greater amounts of carcinogens is in their girth and length. Cigars are simply bigger than cigarettes. Their size allows them to release much more smoke, and in turn, much higher concentrations of toxins and irritants. Also, cigars are designed to be smoked much more slowly than regular cigarettes, and cigar smokers are encouraged to take their time and enjoy the relaxing experience. This results in longer smoke times, and obviously, the creation of much more smoke. It is advised for all non-smokers to avoid areas where cigars are being smoked. If you smoke cigars, make sure to do so in a well-ventilated area.

The Names Behind Cigars

If you?re an avid cigar smoker, chances are you have pondered the question on the minds of many: what would I call my cigar line if I suddenly found myself rolling tobacco? Some of you might name it after your mom, others may name it after a childhood pet, calling it something like Smokey. Some of you may name it after a specific region, and others may simply love it, hug it, and name it George.

Those who do roll their own tobacco ponder this very same question; they often find their answers in a plethora of places. Attesting to the variety and individuality each line of cigars possess, the names maintain a similar sense of originality. The following is a list of some of the names of cigars on the market and the reasons for their declaration.

Romeo Y Juliet - Most of us know the story of Romeo and Juliet, the tale of two ill-fated people trapped between the conflict of dueling families. Known as one of the most stunning love stories of all time, William Shakespeare?s portrayal of two innocent lovers put Romeo and Juliet on the map, making them representative of both a true love lost and the problem with communication between those who are dating. As cigars, Romeo and Juliet fair much better; the tragedy lies in not smoking them.

William Penn- Born in 1644, William Penn founded the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a colony in North America that became the state of Pennsylvania. Overseeing the affairs of the Commonwealth, Penn became influential to the US Constitution. A bit overzealous, Penn also composed and published The United States of Europe, a plan to unify Europe in American fashion. William Penn was particularly notable because, in a time of oppression, he treated Native Americans with the respect they deserved. In fact, he often served as a mediator whenever a dispute came about.

Winston Churchill - The name Churchill has become so synonymous with the word cigars that some people may forget Winston Churchill was actually a statesman, an orator, and a Prime Minister. However, a cigar smoker first a prime minister and all the rest second, there are very few men in history who were as enthusiastic about cigars as Winston. His insistence on rarely being photographed without a cigar in hand led one London cartoonist to dub him ?Cigarface.?

Henry Clay - An American politician and the founder of the Whig Party, Henry Clay served in the House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Elemental in fighting for modernization and economic development, Henry Clay was also known as The Great Compromiser for his ability to remain clam and composed when facing issues of extreme duress. In his personal life, Henry Clay was a seeker of pleasantries and a gambler, having twice fought in a duel. It was probably his taste of the good life, as well as the fact that he represented a state where tobacco was grown, that led to a cigar line being rolled in his name

Monte Cristo - This cigar brand was named for The Count of Monte Cristo, a novel written by Alexandre Dumas. Legend states that this novel was very well liked among cigar rollers; it was often read aloud in the factories while the rollers worked. Considered to be one of Dumas? best books, The Counte of Monte Cristo involves the supposedly true tale of a man imprisoned for a crime he didn?t commit; he was framed by four jealous friends. While in prison, he was befriended by a dying man and told of the location of a treasure. After his release, this man found the treasure, adopted a new identity and began plotting his revenge.

Mike Ditka - Da, Cigars! The Mike Ditka cigar line is named for, who else, Mike Ditka. Born in 1939, Ditka made a name for himself as a player, a coach, and a television commentator. He?s best known as coach of the Chicago Bears and remains one of only two people to have won a Super Bowl as a player, an assistant coach, and a head coach. Mike Ditka cigars contain a cigar band that is a duplication of the 1985 Super Bowl ring. The cigars, like the man they are named for, contain a bit of bite.

Don Juan - As legend states, Don Juan was a man who courted a girl of noble blood, killing her father when he interfered. Much later, when Don Juan saw a statue of the man he had killed, he irreverently invited it to come over to dine. The statue gladly accepted and the ghost of the murdered man arrived for dinner (don?t you hate when that happens?). As this ghost shook Don Juan?s hand, Don Juan was dragged into Hell.

Simon Bolivar - Often credited with liberating Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and Bolivia, Simon Bolivar is one of the most renown figures in South American history. Having freed these countries from Spanish rule, he is known as The Liberator. Seventy-one years after his death, in 1901, the Roche Company in Havana honored him by placing his name on their cigar brand.

Having a cigar named after you is a huge honor; few people have the ability to look in a cloud of cigar smoke and see their reflection. Whether a brand is named for a historical figure or a figure of literary merit, the names behind each brand of cigars all serve a purpose, and they all tell a story, forever perpetuating the unique culture that only the luxury of tobacco can possess.

How to Spot Fake Cuban Cigars

Everyone knows that Cuban cigars are the most coveted cigars, renown worldwide for their smoothness and rich flavors. Indeed, Cuban cigars are so prized that many illegitimate dealers have been known to sell fake Cubans to unsuspecting cigar smokers. How do you tell if what you have is a fake or the real thing? First, make certain that you purchase your cigars from a legitimate dealer. Buying from your local tobacconist or a reputable mail order business can protect you from forking your money over for a box of fake cigars.

If you have an opportunity to purchase a box of purported Cuban cigars, but have your doubts, take the time to examine the box before purchasing it. Here are a few tips to help you spot the fakes from the real thing.

The most important thing to examine is the box. Authentic Cuban cigars will contain a green and white warranty seal on the left front side of the box. The seal will contain an insignia that has a picture of a shield and a hat. On the upper right hand corner of the box, you should find a white sticker that is placed diagonally with the word 'Habanos' printed on it. The overall appearance of the box should be neat and clean. If the box appears damaged, smudged, frayed, or marked, avoid it. If the color of the box is dull, don't buy it. Even if the cigars are the real things, their quality may have suffered in transport. If you are in the market for Cohiba, Trinidad, or Q'dorsay brand cigars, know that all authentic Cohiba's will contain the green and white warranty seal on the right hand side of the box.

On the bottom of the box of cigars, you should find a heat stamp with the words 'Habanos.' The heat stamp should be impressed onto the bottom of the box. Fake Cuban cigar boxes often find other ways to imprint this label, such as using rubber stamps or paper labels. You should also find a factory code stamp at the bottom that is stamped in green, blue or black ink. This stamp will tell you when and where the cigars were rolled.

If you can open the box, take the time to smell the tobacco. Cuban cigars will have a deep, rich aroma, unmistakable to dedicated cigar aficionados. If the smell is off, or very weak, chances are you do not have a box of authentic Cuban cigars in your hands. The cigars should be facing the same way, and the top row may appear slightly flattened. The caps on all the cigars should appear identical, and the foot of each cigar should be cut clean. The bands on all the cigars should also be identical, and should be arranged so that they face the same direction. If allowed, test the cigars out by pressing down on them. Feel along the entire length of each cigar, checking for soft or hard spots. The cigars should feel firm yet pliable.

How to Pair Cigars and Alcohol

The cigar has long been viewed as a luxury of the rich and powerful. Images of well-to-do men puffing on a stogie and swirling a glass of good brandy Romeo Y Julieta Cigars have been well documented and memorialized in films and TV. If you are just becoming interested in cigars and would like to relax with a stogie and drink after a long day's work, here are a few tips to get you started.

Traditionally, the cigar has been paired with a strong drink. Popular spirits include rum, brandy, or whiskey. Some argue that a good cigar should always be paired with a strong drink that has a hint of sweetness. Indeed, cigar smokers have long enjoyed these popular pairings. For years, the idea of pairing cigars with beer has gone overlooked. But why overlook good old beer? Recently, the trend has been to pair cigars with various varieties of beer. It seems that as cigars have entered the mainstream, it has been democratized and popularized. What better way to enjoy a puff of this newly popularized treat than to pair it with beer?

Pairing a good cigar with a good beer is not an easy feat, but when accomplished, it is well worth Famous Smoke the effort. Much of the pairing has to do with your experience White Smoke level. If you are a novice, you will probably need help in pairing your specific cigar with an appropriate beer. If you have a more experienced palate, and you know what you like, you can probably make connections between certain types of cigars and beers.

Because cigars are so strong Smoke Alarm and flavorful, one of the challenges in pairing is to find a beer that complements the intensity of most cigars. Most cigars will pair nicely with a good barely wine or a single malt scotch. If your cigar can be described as woody, spicy, with hints of cedar, try pairing Arturo Fuente Cigars it with a barley wine. The fruity hint of barely wine should complement nicely with the spicy flavor of your cigar. The combination of a spicy cigar with a slightly fruity beer can create an overall creaminess that enhances the flavors of each significantly.

If you have no clue as to what flavor combinations might work, experiment. First, find a cigar that you enjoy. Try to identify the characteristics that you enjoy about it. Then, find a beer whose flavors you think might 'match' or complement the cigar. Many incredible discoveries have been made Liquid Smoke in much this same way.

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Smoking Pipes, Pipe Bowls, Cigar or Cigarette Holders, and Parts Thereof in Netherlands

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Smoking Pipes, Pipe Bowls, Cigar or Cigarette Holders, and Parts Thereof in Netherlands
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof in Netherlands face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof to Netherlands? How important is Netherlands compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof vary from one country of origin to another in Netherlands? On the supply side, Netherlands also exports smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof. Which countries receive the most exports from Netherlands? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof in Netherlands. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof for those countries serving Netherlands via exports, or supplying from Netherlands via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Netherlands fits into the world market for imported and exported smoking pipes, pipe bowls, cigar or cigarette holders, and parts thereof. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Netherlands in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Netherlands is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Netherlands compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.
