Cigars vs. Cigarettes: Which is worse for Your Health?

Most everyone has heard about the health risks of smoking both cigars and cigarettes, and the dangers of secondhand smoke. But which is worse? Do cigar smokers really have the advantage over cigarettes smokers? The answer is much more complicated than anyone ever thought.

A Matter of Degree

Research Smoking List from the National Cancer Institute indicates Second Hand Smoking that the health risks posed by both cigarettes and cigars are strongly linked to frequency of use. That is, it's not whether you smoke cigarettes or cigars, but how much and how often you consume them. That said, evidence indicates that cigars contain many more carcinogens than cigarettes. It also appears that cigar smoke is more toxic than cigarette secondhand smoke. To Inhale or Not?

Debate has also concentrated on the issue of inhaling nicotine from cigars and cigarettes. Dedicated cigar enthusiasts argue that cigars are less dangerous than cigarettes because they don't require you to inhale as much toxins. The National Cancer Institute's research indicates that both cigar and cigarette smokers are exposed to carcinogens, regardless of whether they inhale or not. Even without inhaling, smokers are still exposing their mouths, tongues, larynxes, and throats to carcinogens. In fact, simply holding an unlit cigar or cigarette between your lips can expose you to carcinogens. Furthermore, when saliva comes in contact with a cigar Smoke Signals or cigarette, even momentarily, carcinogens are swallowed. When carcinogens are swallowed, the throat, larynx, and esophagus further become exposed to these toxins and irritants. Cigarette and cigar smokers appear to swallow similar amounts of carcinogens, resulting in approximately the same percentage of risk in developing oral and esophageal cancers.

Research indicates that the health risks associated with both cigars and cigarettes may be reduced if the degree inhalation Up In Smoke is adjusted. Because most cigarette smokers tend to inhale deeply and smoke on a regular basis, they are at higher risk of developing cancer of the larynx. Staring in the mid 1990's a number of cultural phenomena caused an explosion of the popularity of cigars in the United States. Lavish dinner events were being held in nearly every consequential metropolitan area in the United States. Attendees included celebrities, radio and talk show hosts, politicians, and even a surprisingly large number of women! As we moved into the 21st century the love of cigars has continued to grow more popular and high profile people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, actor turned governor of California have helped to enhance the growth.

This enormous increase in demand for cigars has its downside in the fact that it has been difficult to provide the supply needed. This situation has really awakened people to how significant President Kennedy's ban of Cuban Cigars with the trade embargo he signed in 1962, before many of today's cigar aficionados were born really is. Incidentally, President Kennedy made sure that he was delivered 1,000 fine Cuban cigars before he signed the executive order authorizing the embargo.

As usual with issues of supply and demand, this created a huge price gouging issue with many cigar retailers, most of which were new establishments looking to take advantage of the skyrocketing interest in cigars. These sellers were virtually naming their price on any and every type of cigar and getting it. A lot of these cigar dealers were even refusing to allow a customer to buy an entire box so that they could have them on hand for other clients.

In the rush to try to meet the demand, the quality of many premium cigars suffered for brief periods of time. Eventually, consumer demand was so far ahead of supply that many of those who had begun smoking fine cigars had to cease the practice altogether. For many, this was mainly due to either lack of supply or outrageous prices. For others, the newness of the fad had simply worn off. As of today, cigar prices have returned to acceptable levels, and supply of the best brands is abundant for those who continue to enjoy cigar smoking, even in the face of public scrutiny and disapproval.

Today they have grown to become a successful, vertically integrated company based in Miami, Florida. They grow their own tobacco, manufacture their own cigars and boxes, and handle their own distribution. Camacho Cigars manufactures 16 cigar names, seven of which are their own labels.

Cigar Review: Could you tell me about the history of the Eiroa Family in relation to the cigar business?

Christian Eiroa: Our story is very similar to most others that had to leave Cuba. My grandfather grew tobacco in Cuba. In doing so, he built a great relationship with the Oliva family (the tobacco people, not the cigar people). They were based in Tampa. My father left Cuba in 1959 and joined the army to participate in the Bay of Pigs invasion. He then served in Korea. Once finished, he went back to Tampa where he secured a job at Perfecto Garcia. When the Embargo was to commence, Angel Oliva offered my father to go to Honduras and try to grow tobacco. At this time, tobacco was being grown in many areas because the leaf brokers needed to find new sources of tobacco. After the first crop, my father decided to go on his own. Eventually, he had close to 2,000 acres where he grew tobacco in. Some in partnerships, some by himself. As time went on, he got into making cigars for others and in the mid - 80's he purchased the Baccarat "The Game" brand and in the mid 90's, Camacho.

Cigar Review: How important are cigars to the Eiroa Family?

Christian Eiroa: Growing tobacco and making cigars is all we have ever done! I grew up in the farms, worked in the factories since I was about 7 yrs. old over the summers. We love this business. What we love most is the creation of something so enjoyable that started with one small seed. It truly is amazing. You should come down to see us so you can witness it all yourselves. Yes, this is an invitation, you are welcome to come on any of the trips we program. All you have to do is cover your travel expenses and a couple of other incidental fees. How and when did you get involved in the family business? June 28th, 1995. Soon after I finished my master's degree and felt ready to go down to Honduras, I did. I guess I always knew that this is what I would end up doing. If there were a narrator, he would be saying: "It was Christian's destiny".

Cigar Review: Have the increased amount of hurricanes in the past year and a half hurt the your tobacco crops?

Christian Eiroa: Most of the time they do not run into our growing season. They do cause us to lose seed beds and they do delay the starting time. Nothing crucial, fortunately.

Cigar Review: Is business good for the Camacho brand right now?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, we just finished launching three great items: The Camacho Coyolar (Black), the Legend - ario and the Camacho Time campaign is under way. Camacho identifies our company so much that as of 11 / 01 / 05, we have changed our name to "Camacho Cigars". What is your perspective on the current status of the Cigar Industry? I think that the cigars being offered today in the U.S. are some of the best, ever, anywhere. Although most of the companies today are very traditional we love to see how the market is evolving. This only makes us want to keep pushing to see how much we can influence consumers' tastes. Does this make any sense? Because we were always following tradition, we were careful about not moving away from it. Today, this has become part of the fun. If you had time to interview some old - timers, guys who have been smoking for 20 + years, they might tell you just that. They might tell you how much they love the fact that the choices are available. The industry is solid and steady.

Cigar Review: Do you think the TV advertisements from truth.com have hurt or actually helped the tobacco industry?

Christian Eiroa: This is a good question. California once issued a report during the 90's to try to dissuade people from smoking cigars. However, the results only helped us. The results were:

The higher your education level and the higher your income, the more you smoked cigars and less you smoked cigarettes. The lower your education and the lower your income, the more you smoked cigarettes. I guess what I am trying to say is that a person who decides to make cigar smoking his hobby, does so knowing that this is not the healthiest of hobbies. They also know that their risks for addiction are much less. With this in mind, I think the answer would have to be "they have neither hurt nor helped". Those campaigns cater cigarette smokers more than they do cigar smokers.

Cigar Review: The recent talk is that we are heading into a new cigar boom, do you think we are headed that way?

Christian Eiroa: There has been talk about this for some time. The numbers do not agree with it, though. Consumption in our industry has remained steady with low single digit increased for the past 3 years. Those who feel the increases may be retailers who have had competitors close shop and us smaller cigar companies who have grown at the expense of some now defunct manufacturers and / or bigger companies.

Cigar Review: Do some lines sell more than others for Camacho Cigars? If so Which?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, our bread and butter: Baccarat "The Game".

Cigar Review: Can you tell us about what is being called "Camacho Black", your new line?

The Camacho Coyolar is a cigar made 100 % with the tobacco from the farm with the same name. It's a smaller property but has been my father's favorite farm for 40 years. We only used it to grow filler but this Coyolar seed actually yielded some beautiful wrapper. The cigars are much stronger than we anticipated so we have been letting them sit for longer periods of time. We are very happy with this cigar, especially since we have been able to make it with the tobacco from that farm.

Cigar Review: Are there going to be any new Cigars added to your lineup? If so could you tell us about the future plans of Camacho Cigars?

Christian Eiroa: Yes, the Legend-ario which has just been launched and next year there may be a surprise or two which I do not wish to talk about just yet.

Cigar Review: Do you have a favorite smoke from the Camacho Cigar lineup?

Christian Eiroa: The Camacho SLR Rothschild mad., the Legend-ario and the Diploma. Those are my three favorites.

Metropolitan Cigars on 7th Avenue, in the historic Ybor City section of Tampa, Florida features one of the world's largest walk-in humidors with a history dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Two wonderful discoveries in cigars were made on the recommendation of owner Sam Capitano.

Metropolitan Cigars has quite an interesting history that follows the development of Ybor City into the cigar capitol of the world in the early 1900's. The atmosphere of Ybor City demands attention. Brick lined streets overlooked by black wrought iron balconies, shops featuring hand made treasures, and cuisine of Cuban and Italian decent topped off with Cuban coffee and caf? con leche are everywhere.

At the turning of the 20th Century, Ybor City's population was made up of mostly Spanish, Cuban, and Italian immigrants. Tampa was no more than a mosquito-ridden fishing village of some 700 people when Vicente Martinez Ybor, a cigar manufacturer and Cuban exile, came to Tampa to establish his factory.

Before long, the population of immigrants swelled to 30,000 and contributed to making Tampa the cigar capital of the world. Francisco Capitano and Company were famous manufacturers of "high grade Havana cigars" in the early years. Events leading to the Spanish-American War in 1898 led to increased world attention on this growing metropolis.

The cigar workers of Ybor City responded to Jose Marti's plea for men, money, and arms for the insurgents who opposed Spain's rule over Cuba. In 1898, thousands of U.S. troops arrived in the Tampa staging area as Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders prepared for military operations in the Spanish-American war. At the culmination of the war, the population of Tampa once again thrived.

After numerous successful years in the tobacco business, James Capitano, son of Francisco, decided to take the family in a different direction. In 1933 he opened the Metropolitan Pharmacy--named in honor of the $900 loan taken out of his Metropolitan Life insurance policy. The present Metropolitan Cigar Shop grew directly from the Metropolitan Pharmacy. The shop prospered during the era of World War II when the shipyards at the Port of Tampa operated 24 hours a day.

James Capitano's success was based in part by the expansion of the pharmacy's stock to include lunch boxes for the shipyard workers, whisky and alarm clocks - along with an extensive selection of fine local cigars.

Sam "Sonny" Capitano, Owner - Metropolitan Cigars

After thriving for half a century, the cigar industry abruptly fell victim to the automated machine-made cigar. Many of the big Ybor City cigar factories closed and only a few small operators kept the art of hand rolling cigars alive. A centuries old craft was nearly lost. However, the Metropolitan Pharmacy remained.

This isn't the end of Metropolitan's story. Fast forward to the 21st century and discover a newly vibrant Ybor City - a renaissance based on its designation as a Historical District. The festive atmosphere of restaurants and clubs attract diners and dancers every evening. Cigars have made their way from the back room in this century too. Sonny Capitano closed the doors of the Metropolitan Pharmacy in 1992 to open a successful cigar shop inside the historic Columbia Restaurant. Five years later, Sonny found himself establishing another shop - the Metropolitan Cigar Shop of today on Seventh Avenue.

I asked Sam for a couple of cigar recommendations. My first request was for an inexpensive bundled smoke of medium body. He directed me to a bundle of 20 - "Cuban Leaf, Rare Connecticut Habano Torpedos" for $24. That's $1.20 per stick! I have to admit, I was skeptical at that low a price that they would be any good, but I bought them anyway. What a pleasant surprise! They were a steal. He then directed me to his own brand of "Don Capitano Maduro Torpedos" for $7.00. They were excellent!

WHAT IS LATENT DEMAND AND THE P.I.E.?

The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable, or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an efficient manner. It is typically expressed as the total revenues potentially extracted by firms. The market is defined at a given level in the value chain. There can be latent demand at the retail level, at the wholesale level, the manufacturing level, and the raw materials level (the P.I.E. of higher levels of the value chain being always smaller than the P.I.E. of levels at lower levels of the same value chain, assuming all levels maintain minimum profitability).

The latent demand for little cigarette-size cigars weighing less than 3 pounds per 1,000 cigars is not actual or historic sales. Nor is latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e., not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

For reasons discussed later, this report does not consider the notion of unit quantities, only total latent revenues (i.e., a calculation of price times quantity is never made, though one is implied). T

The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for United States in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that United States is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize United States compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Owned by a Philadelphia based enterprise and named after a well known and respected English pipe-maker these fine tailored cigars are made in the Dominican Republic.

These cigars come in three different styles of flavor. The first is simply known as Ashton. Then there is the Ashton Cabinet Selection and the Ashton Aged Maduro. All three are wrapped in Conneticut Leaf, although the Ashton Aged Maduro is wrapped in broadleaf instead of shade, and is also filled with a Domincan blend. You really must try them all to find your own personal preference.

The Cabinet Selection is the mildest of the three, due to the extra aging of the tobacco. If you prefer a slightly richer smoke go with the standard selection. If you like a sweeter cigar go with a Maduro No. 10. I personally recommend the standard selection but the selection of cigars is truly a personal decision.

Ashton also offers the Ashton Crown series which is made with only the most precious leaves from the Chatea de la Fuente farm. These special cigars are always a great choice.

Ashton is definitely my favorite brand of cigars. The quality and consitency of associated with this brand is unsurpassed. My favorite is the Ashton VSG, or virgin sun grown cigar.
